TB Laboratory Network In Kenya

TB laboratory network in Kenya Consists of 770 TB diagnostic sites. There are about 1,500 laboratory staff working in Government of Kenya institutions, there are over 300,000 sputum smears examined each year in the country.

Apart from from the central TB laboratory services all other laboratory services are integrated with all other lab work and technicians rotate between benches every 2 or 3 months.

In the peripheral labs almost all the labs are manned by one all round technician

TB LABORATORY AFB microscopy NETWORK
There are five AFB Levels, the nature of the levels is pyramidal :

1. NPHLS:This level coordinates all the Laboratory services in the country

2. Central Reference Laboratory: this level coordinates External Quality assurance, Culture and DST services in the country.

3. PGHS & REFFERAL HOSPITALS:This level performs EQA, AFB microscopy & TB culture

4. DISTRICT & SUB DISTRICT HOSPITAL: This level performs AFB microscopy,EQA, AFB services & Preparation of ZN reagents for H/C labs under them.

5. HEALTH CENTER & DISPENSARY LABORATORIES:This level performs AFB microscopy services

TB CULTURE AND DST SERVICES
TB Culture and DST are available in Five Laboratories in the Country, They are:

  1. Central Reference TB Laboratory
  2. Moi Teaching and Referal Hospital
  3. Nairobi Hospital-Private
  4. Agha Khan hospital Private
  5. KEMRI mainly research
